This week Salunda attended the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) annual Health, Safety, Environment & Training conference in Amsterdam. The company was primarily promoting its Latch Hawk products to key customers including operators, drilling contractors and rig engineering companies. Although a small event, those in attendance include senior executives with responsibility for preventing accidents and enforcing safety throughout drilling operations, many of whom presented their policies and achievements.
Of particular note were key note presentations by Claus Hemmingsen, (CEO of Maersk Drilling) and Peter Zonjee (Global wells lead at Royal Dutch Shell). Both companies had encouraged employees to produce videos of policies and best practices for safety during drilling operations. These videos featured personnel describing their roles and practices adhered to, and are disseminated within their businesses. What was telling was the pride and professionalism of the featured staff. Check 6 is a group of retired fast jet pilots, including graduates of the famous United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics School “TOP GUN”, who provide training in leadership and teamwork. These fascinating gents were in fact “the best of the best” and would happily regale you with anecdotes of night time carriers landings and air to air refuelling! Huisman Drilling presented a novel, automated rig package including rotating towers, active draw works and a proprietary top drive. The approach is completely orthogonal to traditional derrick design and I have a feeling the industry will see more of this innovative company.
