Prevent DROPS

The fingerboard consists of steel latches or ‘fingers’ to retain stands in the setback area. The latches are pneumatically operated to open and close and any mismatch between latch command and the actual status of a latch can potentially lead to catastrophic incidents.

Latch Hawk is a fingerboard latch monitoring solution. Each latch is retrofitted securely with a sensor to confirm real-time latch status helping to protect both crew and assets.

Easy to install

Latch Hawk’s fingerboard latch sensors are quickly and easily retrofitted onto each latch. Real-time latch status is streamed wirelessly to the drilling control system.

Alert and Interlock

If a command is sent to open a latch and it does not do so a real-time alarm is triggered. Optional interlocks can also inhibit racker movement to prevent collisions.

Optimise with insights

Comprehensive data from this real-time system can be used for further analytics. The insights from the analysis can help drive the implementation of targeted maintenance.

Eliminate fingerboard DROPS incidents

Historically, drillers would rely on spotters to visually inspect latches. This dangerous job is unable to always verify latch status accurately.

Latch performance is affected by a number of factors including impact from pipe and pipe rackers and corrosion from salt spray, cement and drilling fluids. Latches that are about to fail cannot always be detected by the naked eye. When they do fail and cause a dropped pipe incident it can result in severe injuries and costly downtime to repair damages.

Latch Hawk prevents this by predicting failure, and providing direct confirmation of the latch status in real-time.

Latch Hawk is a network of long-life, retrofit wireless sensors. A unique, patented locking screw allows for rapid installation around operations with no downtime.

Latch Hawk sensors confirm real-time latch status. Data is streamed to a single board computer providing drillers with a visual display of the live fingerboard.

The low-latency network automatically delivers individual latch status to the control system for safer and more efficient drilling and tripping operations.
